The European Reasearchers’ Night is a great opportunity to open our lab to the general public allowing them to witness first-hand cutting-edge research and ignite their curiosity. In this year’s version, the NEXTFLOW team organised two interactive activities.
Neuromorphic cameras: what are they and how to use them in fluid dynamics
Our members Luca Franceschelli and Qihong Li brought an exciting experiment out of the lab to show the incredible potential of neuromorphic cameras in fluid dynamics. The visitors experienced real-time demonstrations of an event-based camera in action, seeing firsthand how they can be applied in real-time flow visualization.
How to optimize a Formula 1 or airplane with helium bubbles and ArtificiaI Intelligence?
Iacopo Tirelli run another experiment demonstrating flow visualization using soap bubbles and a small custom-built multi-fan wind generator. This allowed us to create beautiful and dynamic visualizations of airflow. We also ran real-time Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) using the amazing SmartPIV app. This allowed participants to see velocity vectors on the spot, bringing cutting-edge research to life in an interactive way.
This activity was the result of a collaboration with other members of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial. Thank you Carlos Sanmiguel, Jose Luis Oterino, Juan Alfaro, and Rodrigo Castellanos for participating in the demonstration and constructing the multi-fan array. Special thanks also go to Adrian Grille Guerra and Andrea Sciacchitano for the great advice on soap-bubbles generation.
Both our visitors and us had a great time, we are looking forward to next year’s activities!
